It’s not easy to find good domain names due to the gold rush on domain names. Many big companies and business entrepreneurs bought out most of the good domain names hell-bent to sell them for a lot of money. A great domain name can sell for thousands of dollars.

It’s your turn to pan for a gold nugget. How to find domain name requires creativity and at the same time keep in mind that the domain name needs to be memorable, relevant and simple.

Use this cool Whois tool when you’re ready to find a domain name. If the domain name is available, you may purchase it with GoDaddy or elsewhere. If the domain name is registered, Whois will show you who owns it. A very cool tool!

Domain Names Guidelines

Chances are that the domain name you choose may already be registered. Do a little brainstorming and ask yourself questions about your site such as what is the purpose of my site? Think about the categories and sub-categories that will be included in your site.

The best tool to use to help you be creative and find related words is the Thesaurus Reference tool. So good luck on your search for the perfect domain name.

Here are some guidelines:

mybullet1 Make it memorable: ABC.COM is much easier to remember and more meaningful than QPZ.COM.
mybullet1 Make it relevant: Use keywords to make your domain name relevant. Let’s say your site is going to be about “Siamese cats”, the keyword “cats” should be part of the domain name, the keyword “pets” is too broad since the site is about “Siamese cats” and the word “Siamese” is too restricted in case you wish to expand your site to other breeds of cats in the future.
mybullet1 Don’t tailgate: This is when you use an existing domain name and make it unique with the use of hyphens, such as A-B-C.COM when ABC.COM is already registered.
mybullet1 Keep it short: Most Registries limit domain names to 63 characters. This is still way too long. Keep your domain as short as possible.
mybullet1 Don’t Use TrademarkBrand names: Keep away from trade or brand names as part of the domain name such as allsonyparts.com. Big companies will take leaps and bounds to uphold their reputation. Why risk getting your domain taken away. One way to get around that is to have the brand name as a page such as mywebsite.com/sony.html, this way it is not part of the domain name.
mybullet1 Hyphens: Sometimes it may be necessary to use hyphens, especially when you want a domain name with popular keywords such as “make money.” Try not to use more than 2.
